POUNDLAND has shuttered a popular branch after 16 years in a blow to local shoppers. The popular branch closed for the last time yesterday, Tuesday, August 18 with locals describing the news as a “huge downfall” to the area. In a statement, shared on social media, staff said: “We are very sad to be leaving Inverurie after 16 years. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! “We would like to thank our loyal customers for visiting us day in and day out, it has been a pleasure to serve you and the community. “We would also like to thank our amazing colleagues for all their hard work and great service over the years.” This prompted an outpour of emotional messages from shoppers, with many branding the move as “sad” and said the area “won’t be the same” without the store. It comes amid reports that Poundland’s new owners, Gordon Brothers, could put the chain back on the market just one year after rescuing it from collapse. The Americam firm, which string of discount stores for just £1 last June, are in talks with advisers about launching an auction process for the brand, Sky News said. The discount brand now has around 651 sites, down from about 800 prior to the reorganisation. Most read in Money It has already shut more than 100 locations since June 2025. As for shoppers in Inverurie, reports from local news seem to suggest the vacant lot will be transformed into a Superdrug.
