The closure comes amid reports that Poundland’s new owners, Gordon Brothers, could put the chain back on the market just one year after rescuing it from collapse. The American firm, which bought a string of the discount stores for just £1 last June, are in talks with advisers about launching an auction process for the brand, Sky News has reported. The discount brand now has around 651 sites, down from about 800 prior to the reorganisation. It has already shut more than 100 locations since June 2025. A Poundland store at the Pentagon Centre in Chatham remains open as usual. Shoppers have been reacting to the news of the Chatham High Street closure on social media. One person posted on Facebook: “[Chatham] is becoming a ghost town.” Most read in Money Another said: “They had two shops a stone throw away from each other, it was inevitable one was eventually going to close. “Makes sense to keep the one in the Pentagon.” A third person wrote: “The staff were always friendly and helpful in my experience. I really hope they are all successful in finding employment elsewhere.” A fourth person added: “Our high streets really are looking sad and we want them looking like they were back in the 80s.” A spokesperson for Poundland told Kent Live that the reason for the closure is because the business has been unable to secure new lease terms for the store. They added: “Whenever we close a store in these kinds of circumstances we consult with colleagues to look at other opportunities and that work is underway.” Comment now
