Political Deadlock in Romania Threatens €770m EU Lifeline

An unusual meeting on Tuesday afternoon between Romanian President Nicusor Dan, government representatives and leaders of the main pro-European parties was visibly tense from the outset. Political leaders were not smiling, not even as a matter of protocol. Their greetings were formal, as was their interaction throughout the meeting. The talks were important because they were expected to adopt a law that would allow Romania to avoid losing approximately 770 million euros in funding from the EU-backed National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). European funds are vital to Romania’s strained budget, supporting healthcare, education and infrastructure projects. EU funding is equivalent to around one third of the country’s gross domestic product. Romania must reform its public sector law in order to receive the EU’s funding.
