Polish Pilecki Institute Websites Hacked With Russian Propaganda

Hackers breached websites belonging to a Polish state institute that documents Nazi and Communist-era crimes, posting content echoing Russian propaganda and promoting anti-Ukrainian narratives, the institute said. The cyberattack took place overnight, targeting the main website of the Witold Pilecki Institute of Solidarity and Valour as well as sites linked to its branches in Berlin and the northeastern Polish town of Augustów, the institute said on Friday. Its IT team blocked the attack and took the affected websites offline. “The situation has been brought under control. All archives are safe,” the Pilecki institute said. ‘We will not give up’ A security review of all of the institute’s websites is underway, with officials saying they would seek to restore access as soon as possible. “For years, the Pilecki Institute has been actively opposing disinformation, researching the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century, and collaborating with Ukrainian archives and institutions,” the institute said. “The Pilecki Institute will not give up this mission, irrespective of pressure and aggression it has experienced,” it added. Named after resistance hero Founded in 2018, the institute researches Nazi and Communist crimes and works to preserve the memory of victims of 20th-century totalitarian regimes. It is named after Witold Pilecki, a Polish resistance fighter who voluntarily entered the Nazi German Auschwitz concentration camp to gather intelligence and whose reports became some of the earliest eyewitness accounts of atrocities committed there. He was later executed by Poland’s communist authorities in 1948 following a politically motivated trial. Medical data stolen The attack comes just days after a major cyber breach in which the medical data of nearly 19 million people was stolen. The attack targeted records held by MyDr, one of Poland’s largest electronic medical-record providers, including prescription, medication and other sensitive patient data. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Thursday that the breach appeared to have been financially motivated, with indications that the hackers were seeking to extort a ransom from the company.
