Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gunti, among others, addressing a press conference in Bidar on Monday. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT Nearly one-and-a-half years after a daylight robbery in which a cash van employee was shot dead and ₹83 lakh taken away in Bidar city, the police have cracked the case with the arrest of two key accused in Bihar, Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gunti has said.At a press conference in Bidar on Monday, Mr. Gunti said that the arrests followed sustained investigation by the Bidar Police, including tracking the accused across States and a 15-day operation in Bihar.The two accused were arrested near Damodarpur village in Vaishali district, Bihar, and brought to Bidar, where they have been produced before a court which remanded them in judicial custody.The accused have been identified as Alok Kumar (also known as Ambani, Munchun, Chotu, Ashutosh) and Aman Kumar, both residents of Vaishali district in Bihar.According to the police, the two are wanted in 16 cases registered across Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.The crime occurred on January 16, 2025 when two armed men targeted employees of an ATM cash replenishment agency outside the State Bank of India’s main branch at Shivaji Chowk in Bidar, while ₹83 lakh in cash was being moved for replenishing ATMs in the city.The assailants, who were wearing helmets and masks, threw chilli powder at the employees and made an attempt to snatch the cash trunk. When the employees resisted, one of the accused opened fire.Giri Venkatesh, cash van employee, died on the spot, while another employee, Shivakumar, suffered a bullet injury to the chest.The assailants then fled on a motorcycle with the cash trunk.A case was registered at the Market Police Station under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.BreakthroughMr. Gunti said that the police pursued several leads since the incident and examined the movements and contacts of the suspects across different States. Multiple teams were deployed as part of the effort to identify and trace those involved in the robbery and murder.The investigation eventually led the police to Vaishali district in Bihar. A team stayed in the area for about 15 days and gathered information on the movements of the two accused before locating them near Damodarpur village.The police said that the accused were travelling on a motorcycle bearing Bihar registration number when they were intercepted. They made an attempt to escape but were surrounded and apprehended by the police team.The operation briefly resulted in confusion among residents who mistook the police personnel for kidnappers. The local police were given information of the operation and the two accused were brought to Bidar.Mr. Gunti said that investigation will continue to establish the role of other suspects, trace the money and recover the weapons and other material evidence connected with the crime.He appreciated the police teams for their sustained efforts in pursuing the case and tracing the accused across State borders.
