Police book nine students for ragging juniors in Pandeshwar

The Mangaluru South Police have booked nine students of a private college in Pandeshwar on the charge of kidnapping and attempting to murder a junior student in the guise of ragging.An FIR was registered and submitted before the jurisdictional magistrate court on Wednesday, based on the complaint of victim Ameer Ali, 19, a native of Thrissur district in Keralam and currently pursuing first year BBA at Srinivas University, Pandeshwar. The victim accused his seniors, Naseed Ameer, Adil M., Ashrak, Anish, Uvais, Rohan Ramesh, Adil V.P., Rehan M.P., and Shinas, of kidnapping him, confining him in a room, and attempting to murder him.The victim said on September 19 afternoon, he was walking along the public road outside the college along with his friend Mohammed Alfaz when the accused forcibly abducted them on their motorcycles. They were taken to a house and were kept locked in a room. The accused allegedly undressed the complainant and his friend and made them wear shorts and beat them up using hands, belts, hangers etc. They also attempted to assault them with an iron fist. The ragging continued till late evening before the accused left them.Even on the next day, the accused threatened the victim to come to college clean shaven and without wearing shoes. Fearing further harassment, he informed the parents, who advised the victim to lodge a police complaint.‘Dangerous trend’Responding to the incident, Dakshina Kannada district unit of DYFI on Thursday said reports of ragging students, particularly those from outside the State, in private colleges in and around Mangaluru, has been a cause for concern. DYFI leader Santosh Bajal said a number of ragging complaints from a particular college in Pandeshwar were being made underscoring the need for a serious probe by the police.
