Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urgently convened ministers, military officials and intelligence chiefs on Sept. 14 after a Russian strike hit a passenger train near Poland’s border with Ukraine. He added that Poland and its NATO allies “must be ready to respond jointly if necessary.” Russian strike hits train near Polish border On Sept. 13, Russian forces struck the Yahodyn railway station in Ukraine’s Volyn region, just kilometers from the Polish border. A drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train traveling from Kyiv to Warsaw. Russian forces also struck a nearby gas station. The railway is a key route for foreign officials traveling to Kyiv and has been used by world leaders throughout Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Poland scrambled fighter jets during the Russian attack, while Ukrainian authorities issued warnings to residents in border areas. Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway operator, said the train may have been targeted deliberately. The diplomatic train had reportedly left the station earlier than scheduled.
