Poland Evacuates Two Border Crossings as Russian Attacks Hit Western Ukraine

Poland temporarily evacuated two border crossings with Ukraine on Thursday, Sept. 24, as Russia continued its attacks near the Polish border, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. The Dorohusk and Zosin crossings were evacuated for about 30 minutes around noon, according to Polish broadcaster RMF24. Tusk announced the evacuation during a press conference in Warsaw following a meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev. “Russia has attacked Ukraine again near the Polish border, and once again we had to evacuate the border crossings,” Tusk said, according to RMF24. The evacuation came as Russia continued a major aerial assault on Ukraine after a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv overnight. Russian drones were reported over several western and central Ukrainian regions on Thursday, including Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Zhytomyr, and Vinnytsia. In the Rivne Oblast, a Russian attack damaged infrastructure, regional governor Oleksandr Koval said. No casualties were reported initially. In Khmelnytskyi, a Russian drone hit a residential apartment building, according to Ukrainian authorities. Emergency crews evacuated residents from the building. The attacks also caused major disruption to rail services in western Ukraine. Ukrainian Railways reported delays of several hours on trains heading toward Uzhhorod, Przemysl, Lviv, and Truskavets, with some services delayed by more than six hours. Tusk said the latest attack demonstrated the need for Poland to remain vigilant and cooperate closely with Ukraine. He also warned European partners that the coming weeks and months could be difficult. “Autumn and winter could prove truly critical,” Tusk said.
