Pokemon TCG World Record Broken By Umbreon Card

An Umbreon Pokemon Card Just Set A New World Record Published Oct 20, 2026, 6:00 AM EDT Sam Woods is TheGamer’s Senior Reporter. He’s been in games journalism since 2020 and has undertaken a variety of roles in that time. These have included roles such as SEO Editor, Managing Editor at DualShockers, and Global Head of Gaming, and he's also been seen on the BBC. He was promoted to the Senior Reporter position in 2025 following a series of high-quality reports and exclusives for TheGamer. Since 2020, Sam has written over 3,000 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game. Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, provided context on some AI drama, and revealed that Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games. Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on three occasions. He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times. Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises. In August, a Gold Star Rayquaza from the 2005 EX Deoxys expansion became the first English-language Pokemon TCG card to sell for over $1 million, and just a couple of weeks later, that record was toppled. Continuing the Gold Star trend, an EX Team Rocket Returns Torchic sold for a whopping $2.7 million. As if that weren't enough, the records keep tumbling: just this weekend, an Umbreon card set a new high, and this time, it wasn't a Gold Star. Japanese Umbreon Prime Card Sets A New Record For The Pokemon Since Evolving Skies, Umbreon's popularity has ballooned. The infamous Moonbreon card became one of the most expensive and most sought-after cards from modern expansions. Even though it's barely a few years old, a raw copy sells for roughly $2,350, and a PSA-graded Gem Mint 10 copy sells for $4,670. This pushed up the prices of all previous Umbreons, and any released after came with an Umbreon Tax—most recently, the Prismatic Evolutions card, which sells for more than a Moonbreon in a PSA 10. Now, a new sale has eclipsed everything that came before it: a Japanese Umbreon promo became the most expensive Umbreon ever sold. Sold via Alt, an Umbreon Prime Diasuke Club Promo just sold for over $1 million in a PSA 10. It has a population of only 43 in that grade, but it represents a staggering jump from the previous record Umbreon card. That record was set earlier this month when a 1st Edition Umbreon from Neo Discovery sold for $287,857 in a BGS 10. These sales reflect a worrying trend in the Pokemon Trading Card Game, as more and more people see it as a major investment opportunity rather than a hobby. I've been reporting on it for years, and as far back as January 2025, I noticed worrying increases in the prices of single cards. That has only gotten worse. The issue is perhaps best exemplified, though, by just how hard it is to get hold of any products. For almost two years, new drops have sold out instantly, with scalpers flipping these items for much higher prices. The Pokemon Company is doing what it can to mitigate this, introducing anti-bot protections and increasing its print capacity, but it still feels like it's not enough.
