Now fans are convinced Ruby and Sapphire are next after an official Pokemon account shared a clip from the game that definitely wasn’t captured on a Game Boy Advance. While it might not look like it’s officially affiliated with The Pokemon Company at first, it’s actually the official Japanese Pokemon account. The clip shows the player-controlled character following Mr. Briney and Peeko, the Wingull, around a table. Pokemon accounts post clips from old games pretty often, and even though they get fans excited every time, they almost always mean nothing. However, it’s the quality of this clip that has sparked more hope than usual. It’s the best Ruby and Sapphire have ever looked, at least officially, which has fans questioning what exactly the footage was captured on. It certainly isn’t footage pulled from the original versions of the game, which were originally released on the GBA in 2002. There are unofficial versions of this game that look as good as the footage shared by Pokemon. Emulators that make the games playable on other, non-Nintendo platforms, including phones. So unlikely that the only logical explanation is that this new footage is running on a Switch, maybe even a Switch 2. If that’s the case, then it might mean these games will finally be available on modern platforms very soon, and this random clip has teased their arrival. Other indicators that Ruby and Sapphire, and perhaps Emerald too, are coming to Switch include the length of the clip - exactly 30 seconds, which is when standard Switch video captures max out. Plus, Ruby and Sapphire are the next logical games to bring to Switch after FireRed and LeafGreen. If FireRed and LeafGreen were an experiment, a way to test the waters to see if porting Pokemon’s older games to the latest Nintendo consoles was worth it, then I think they’ve confirmed it needs to be done with more, if not all older Pokemon games. As of four months ago, the ports had sold more than four million copies. For something that would have taken very little effort on Pokemon’s part, that’s not bad at all. My guess is even though this clip has been shared now, it’s going to be a little while before Ruby and Sapphire show up on Switch. If anything, I think that Pokemon Day period, when FireRed and LeafGreen were released on Switch this year, might become the time of year when ports of old games are released. If so, perhaps Switch versions of Ruby and Sapphire are only five months away.
