Pokémon Officially Unveils New Gengar Redesign After 30 Years

Pokémon is entering its fourth decade with no shortage of projects to be excited about, especially following the reveal of Generation 10's Pokémon Winds & Waves. Although Game Freak has confirmed the island-based setting, three new starters, and a planned 2027 release, alleged leaks have teased some amazing and unexpected evolutions, such as Houndour and possibly even Onix. Rumors have suggested Winds & Waves could also introduce hundreds of new Pokémon (some with brand-new types) as well as battles involving multiple enemies, expanded online features, and one of the franchise’s largest regions yet. However, with it being Pokémon's 30th anniversary this year, fans have yet another major announcement to look forward to, and it includes a redesign of one of the most iconic Ghost Pokémon of all time. Introduced in Pokémon Red & Blue, the Ghost/Poison-type Gengar has maintained essentially the same design, with a stout body, pointed ears, red eyes, and sinister grin for 30 years. Its sprites and proportions have been altered slightly over the years, but Gengar itself has never received a permanent redesign, only alternate transformations such as Mega Gengar and Gigantamax Gengar. That is, until now. After months of rumors and leaked info fueling speculation about a new line of Pokemon-themed sneakers, Adidas has officially confirmed the Pokémon x Adidas Originals 30th Anniversary Collection will be releasing in September 2026. Part of this announcement includes some brand-new reveals of previously unseen new designs for iconic Pokémon such as Charmander, Charizard, Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Pikachu, and a brand-new redesign for the beloved Ghost trio, Ghastly, Haunter, and of course, Gengar (seen below). While each of the unique Ghost Pokémon sneakers offer fans a new way to show off their favorites, Gengar's mischievous eye design placement on the sides and signature grin are represented here perfectly and are sure to be a top choice among the several options introduced in the full lineup. Beyond Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar, the expanded Pokémon x Adidas Originals collection includes several sneakers inspired by Pikachu, the complete Charmander evolutionary line, Mewtwo, and Rayquaza. Pikachu receives multiple Superstar and Pro Model designs, while Mewtwo appears across the Samba, ZX 8000, and Handball Spezial. However, Rayquaza may be the most surprising reveal, as the Legendary breaks the collection’s heavy focus on original Kanto Pokémon and receives two distinctive performance-inspired models. Overall, it's been an exciting week for sneaker-heads and Pokémon fans alike, and this new Adidas line is an excellent way to celebrate 30 years with the beloved franchise.
