PNP on alert for possible cyber threats ahead of Sona 2026

INQUIRER/ MARIANNE BERMUDEZ MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on alert for possible cyber threats ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona) this coming Monday, July 27. “Our primary concerns are cyberattacks against critical information infrastructure, the spread of misinformation and coordinated influence operations, and online scams that exploit public interest in the Sona,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement Tuesday. “We are closely monitoring the cyber landscape and are prepared to respond to threats in coordination with our partner agencies,” he maintained. Around 20,000 personnel will be deployed for security measures during the 2026 Sona, the PNP previously said. At least four groups are expected to stage rallies ahead of the Sona, according to the National Capital Region Police Office. “Cybersecurity is now as important as physical security during major national events,” Nartatez said. “Protecting digital systems, ensuring the integrity of information, and safeguarding the public from online threats are essential to maintaining public order and confidence throughout the Sona,” he added. /mr Your subscription could not be saved.
