Plymouth Rock Assurance Co. has sold a western Massachusetts independent agency it bought more than 25 years ago. The buyer, MountainOne Insurance Agency, is owned by regional bank MountainOne Bank. The sale of Amherst-based Encharter Insurance Agency by Plymouth Rock was effective October 1, 2026. Terms were not disclosed. A fixture in the Amherst community since 1879 offering personal and commercial lines insurance, Encharter was formerly known as Blair, Cutting & Smith. As part of the acquisition, 22 Encharter insurance professionals join the MountainOne team, along with the agency’s Amherst office and satellite location in Lexington. North Adams-based MountainOne Insurance Agency provides personal and business property and casualty insurance, surety bonding, employee benefits, life and Medicare coverage. The acquisition of the agency in Amherst establishes MountainOne’s first insurance office in Hampshire County, continuing its expansion throughout the Pioneer Valley and adding to its local offices in Greenfield, Longmeadow, West Springfield, and Wilbraham, as well as communities throughout the Berkshires Since 1999 under Plymouth Rock Assurance’s ownership, Encharter maintained its independent agency model and relationships with multiple insurance carriers. Encharter will gradually transition to the MountainOne Insurance Agency name and brand. Boston-based Plymouth Rock offers auto, home, condo, renters, and umbrella insurance across the six Northeastern states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.
