Sony’s subscription service is home to several classics from the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 era, and depending on your membership, you can play them. For example, as of September this year, you can play a 2004 PS2 classic for free via PS Plus, as it was added to the Classics Catalog. For reference, the Classics Catalog is available exclusively for members of the Premium tier. Even so, it is filled with some great games from decades ago that you may want to play through again or perhaps check out for the very first time. You can, for instance, play the original Ratchet & Clank on PS Plus via the Premium tier’s Classics Catalog. There are several options to pick from, but one of them is a remarkable RPG from the previous century. Originally released in December 1999 in Japan and in June 2000 in North America, The Legend of Dragoon is free on PS Plus. As is the case with the aforementioned classics from the Classics Catalog, access to this RPG is only possible via a Premium tier membership. A turn-based RPG with real-time features, The Legend of Dragoon was created by Sony Computer Entertainment for the original PlayStation, making it a first-party game on PlayStation consoles. Considered a must-play game on PlayStation Plus, The Legend of Dragoon was partially seen as a rival to Square’s Final Fantasy series, even if it had some major differences in style. Even so, some of its similarities made it be seen as a direct competitor, especially with Square’s own shift away from the pixel era with Final Fantasy 7 and subsequent successors. The Legend Of Dragoon Is One Of The Best RPGs Of Its Age Even though the game did not explode in popularity, to the point that its sequel got canceled, it was still one of the most impactful RPGs of the 2000s. The Legend of Dragoon follows a group of heroes led by Dart, as they try to stop the end of the world of Endiness. The game was produced by Shuhei Yoshida, producer for titles like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and more. If Legend of Dragoon doesn't quite tickle your proverbial pickle, you might consider one of the other nine games coming to PlayStation Plus this October. These include: Mafia: The Old Country Horizon Forbidden West Mycopunk Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2 The Midnight Walk Tales of Arise - Beyond the Dawn Edition Monster Energy Supercross 25 Dino Crisis 2 (Premium only) RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Complete Edition (Premium only) The Legend of Dragoon’s availability in the Classics Catalog isn’t exactly new, as it was first added in 2023, but it is one that is often overlooked or forgotten. If you’re a fan of the JRPG genre and want to play something different from the Square Enix formula, be sure to check out The Legend of Dragoon for free on PlayStation Plus.
