Sign in to your ScreenRant account PlayStation Plus has officially dropped a surprise update for a 1999 PS1 classic available in its catalog, and if you haven’t played it yet, this may be the best moment to do so. Amidst the newer games that are added to the catalog so that members can enjoy, there are also some older titles that are treated as classics within Sony’s subscription service. For example, the 2000 PS1 classic on PlayStation Plus, Dino Crisis 2, was added to the catalog in October, allowing subscribers to play the sequel to one of the most beloved survival horror games ever. While new classics are constantly being added, every so often, these titles are getting updates – as surprising as that may be. According to a new post shared by user kabirsingh84 on Reddit, that is precisely what happened with a 1999 classic available on PlayStation Plus. As seen in the post, Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace received a new update on the PlayStation service, and the classic game now features support for a trophy system, allowing players to get more account rewards from playing the title. In total, players can now obtain 21 trophies and 1,350 Points from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Two trophies are bronze, 10 are silver, eight are gold, and one is platinum. It makes perfect sense that old games like this one don’t have a trophy system, but Sony has been making an effort to add them to PS Plus classics for years now. Syphon Filter got trophy support on PS Plus back in 2022, for instance, showing that even if it comes with some wait, older games are getting a nice treatment. For reference, it’s been over two years since Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace joined PS Plus. The game was added to the catalog in January 2024, so fans have been waiting for quite some time to farm trophies with this 1999 classic. As is the case with the majority of the PS1 Classics on PlayStation Plus, access to this game is only granted by the Premium and Deluxe membership tiers. Essential and Extra tier members don’t have access to the Classics catalog. Even though titles are constantly getting trophy support, there are still a few games that have long been available in the catalog that haven’t received the feature. As highlighted by multiple users in the comment section on the Reddit post, Capcom games like the older Resident Evil titles and Dino Crisis on PS Plus still have no trophy support, despite being available in the subscription service’s Classics catalog for years now. There’s no clue if and when these games will get trophy support. Regardless of how some titles are being treated, it’s huge news that Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace received trophy support, even if it came nearly three years late. Apart from the nostalgia, trophies give players an extra incentive to play, and it’s one of the many benefits of being subscribed to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus.
