One of PlayStation's most bankable series, and perhaps even its very best, is Marvel's Spider-Man. Insomniac's incredible direction has made these the quintessential Spider-Man games, all while setting the bar for future superhero titles extraordinarily high. Marvel's Spider-Man's numerous achievements in open-world design and compelling narrative direction are remarkable and have understandably led to Sony pouring as much money into spin-offs and follow-ups as possible. With the upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man 3 release date looming on the horizon, it should come as no surprise that PlayStation is quietly gearing up to get fans excited. It also helps that Marvel's Wolverine has launched to commercial success, garnering slightly less strong reviews than its web-slinging counterpart, but nevertheless commendable review scores. So, to further build the hype being generated by both the excitement for the next installment in the Marvel's Spider-Man series and Wolverine's success, PlayStation has dropped a free download for all to enjoy. PlayStation is no stranger to releasing free DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man and its subsequent follow-ups. Recently, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 got free DLC in the form of brand-new suits based on the recently released Spider-Man movie. Even prior to that, the games were updated with new suits as part of collaborations, to celebrate a milestone, or to celebrate the release of a different project. It's great to see Sony continue this effort with its Spider-Man properties, if only because it means fans get more free goodies, and it's often ill-advised to look a gift horse in the mouth. Carrying on this tradition, PlayStation has given out free avatars based on the aforementioned latest Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. There are five to unlock in total, with each one focusing on a different character from the film, including Spider-Man, Ned, MJ, The Punisher, and Jean Grey. These avatars are free for all users to download and can be obtained by heading to the PlayStation Store on your console and activating the following code depending on your region: Americas: 726X-HNE4-P22M Europe: RG8L-32NF-3NLP Previously, Sony had stated that in order to get these free avatars, you'd need PlayStation Plus. However, these codes can be activated without a PlayStation Plus account, so that doesn't appear to be the case, at least for the time being. This free download may feel a little insignificant for some, but it's a novel bonus that should, at the very least, help to soften the blow about the recently revealed controversy surrounding Marvel's Spider-Man 3. Sony may revoke the ability to activate these codes on an account without PlayStation Plus, so it is worth trying them as soon as possible. However, should the codes fail to work, Sony has stated that anyone who purchases or rents the movie through its platform will also get the avatars. The codes will only work for a limited time (although PlayStation hasn't stipulated how long), so, again, it is worth downloading this free Spider-Man release as soon as possible. Should you miss out, fear not, as Sony frequently releases similar free downloads, including for the likes of Marvel's Spider-Man.
