PlayStation 6 Release Date Gets Official Update From Sony CEO

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have repeatedly aired their grievances about the current state of the global economy, including how it has specifically affected tech and memory for upcoming consoles. Project Helix from Xbox is in the same spot, though the Switch 2 came in just under the wire and didn't even need to raise prices until later after its release. This console generation got off to an interesting start, and it's going to end on an even weirder note. Now, thanks to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has commented on the current state of the PlayStation 6. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Totoki was very brief, but also made it clear where the PlayStation 6 currently stands, and it's not reassuring. There is "no fixed date for the PlayStation 6 launch, and Totoki even mentioned how the company had to harden itself: "Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape." It's a brief but ironclad statement, and it likely shuts down any hope of a 2027 PlayStation 6 launch. As a reminder, here's what Totoki had to say back in May of this year: "[We have] not yet decided on what timing [it] will launch the new console, or at what price...[We] would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy." Totoki also noted that during PlayStation's 2027 fiscal year (ending March 31), memory prices are still expected to be high, with some tech leaders saying things won't level out until at least 2028. Originally, 2027 was a target goal according to some industry pundits, but Sony had to pivot quickly and is currently not even sure when the PlayStation 6 will arrive. The choice to delay this information is multifaceted. Sony has infamously jumped the gun several times in its lifetime on games and tech, only to have people constantly ask for more info while Sony runs into internal issues for years. It also lets Sony fully "ride out" this current economic situation and announce things when the economy is potentially in a better spot. That way they can give more concrete info, start locking down suppliers and manufacturing, and even start toying with how much it'll cost. Right now, if the PlayStation 6 dropped, it would cost as much as many gaming PCs.
