It seems like just yesterday that the PlayStation 5 launched, but with it swiftly approaching its sixth anniversary, it is almost time for the next iteration to be released. However, with the PlayStation 6 (as it has been temporarily named) not yet being confirmed or announced by Sony itself, only rumors and insider reports have hinted at its production. Although Sony has acknowledged its next-generation console in official updates, it has barely shared any information about what it may entail, but with it having to go up against Xbox's Project Helix, it will have to do a lot to stand out in the competitive market. Not only that, but with PlayStation being the subject of many questionable decisions this year, such as the end of physical disks and increasing costs, more and more players are boycotting the console. Now, according to Sony, the PlayStation 6 could face some significant changes when it eventually launches. In previous years, since the launch of the original PlayStation in 1994, a brand-new console has been released every 6/7 years. As such, many fans have expected the PlayStation 6 to arrive in 2027 as there has been no sign of it this year. However, this may not be the case this time around, and that is due to the rising use of AI. Put simply, the rapid growth of AI means that shortages of important computer components are more common, and more expensive. As such, components such as memory are getting harder to come by as the days go by. Could this ongoing shortage affect the production of the PlayStation 6? Well, according to Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki, PlayStation has not yet finalized the release date for the PlayStation 6, explaining that before it can make this decision, the situation with stock shortages needs to be monitored. “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices," Totoki explained. "So we would like to really observe and follow the situation.” Not only that, but according to the CEO, memory shortages are still expected to affect Sony through to its 2027 fiscal year, which runs from April 2027 through to March 2028. So, this could mean that the PlayStation 6 may be delayed until 2028 if stock shortages continue. However, as Totoki explained, "We would like to think about various simulations, including changing business models to come up with the best solution and strategy." It would be untruthful to say that the PlayStation 6 has been delayed to 2028, as it has yet to be announced in the first place and until now, a release date of 2027 has been a mere estimation by insiders. However, it is never good to be reminded of how the rise of AI could potentially affect the gaming sphere as a whole. After all, the PlayStation 5 has left a lot to the imagination, according to fans. Not only was it released during the COVID-19 pandemic where stock shortages and scalpers made it almost impossible to purchase one, but it has welcomed fewer exclusive games than ever, leaving many fans wondering if they would even purchase the PlayStation 6 if it released tomorrow.
