Passengers waiting to board a flight were offered a choice by their captain: wait for the plane to be cleaned after a dog peed on the previous flight, or get home on time with the cabin smelling like urine. According to the woman who shared video, the pilot put it to a show of hands. This looks like Delta at New York LaGuardia to me, though readers please correct me. View Jennifer Coffey’s thread on Threads There’s a real split for what to do here. Some commenters offer, “Get me home please. I probably smell like my dog anyways” “Some people smell worse.” “Dog people all raised their hands. Doesn’t bother them.” “What’s wrong with the pilot. That was very rude. Wonder how many times he peed his pants!” “I want a refund and a new plane” One commenter insisted flight attendants could have cleaned it in five minutes, or a cleaning crew could have arrived in three. But we have no idea how bad the plane is. And small delays can cascade. On my Delta flight from New York JFK to Austin we returned to the gate over a dog’s paperwork. (It wasn’t a real service dog, and the passenger simply snuck it on and pet it in her lap.) The passenger and dog were allowed back on once she’d signed it was a service animal, but then we needed more fuel. A shift change for refueling turned 30 minutes into two hours. Everyone wants to get where they’re going. They don’t want so sit beside the spoilage. At least everyone was told about the problem before they boarded. But here’s the challenge with democracy: The person sitting directly beside the affected area suffers far more than everyone else. But everyone has an equal voice. And anyone objecting holds up everybody else’s trip. There’s no secret ballot. At least passengers weren’t told where the soiling happened in the cabin, so everyone is behind a veil of ignorance as it were over whether they’ll suffer disproportionately or not. On a Delta flight from Atlanta to Miami an animal had become ill on the previous flight, boarding began before cleaning was finished, and a passenger stepped in the mess. He reported being handed paper towels to deal with it himself. The aircraft was taken out of service for a deep cleaning. Last year, a reader endured repeated dog diarrhea on a Delta Fort Lauderdale–Los Angeles flight. Delta initially offered 4,000 SkyMiles. The plane was supposed to continue to Las Vegas, but they needed a new aircraft for that. And a Frontier passenger reported a delay of more than three hours after a dog did its duty before departure from Dallas–Fort Worth to Baltimore. Several commenters asked why this dog wasn’t in a carrier. Pets in cabin are supposed to, while claimed service animals do not have to. Topics on this page
