Peru’s Ignacio Buse Stuns Medvedev in Landmark Paris Masters Victory

Peru’s Ignacio Buse delivered one of the biggest upsets of the Paris Masters on Wednesday, defeating world No. 5 Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 to reach the round of 16 at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career. The 22-year-old Peruvian, ranked No. 33 in the world, needed just one hour and 40 minutes to eliminate the fourth-seeded Russian, a former world No. 1 and the 2020 Paris Masters champion. The victory marked another milestone for Peruvian tennis. Buse became the first Peruvian man to defeat a top-10 opponent since Luis Horna beat Richard Gasquet at the Italian Open in 2008. He also became the first Peruvian player to reach the round of 16 at the Paris Masters. Buse controlled the opening set with patient baseline exchanges, staying close to Medvedev before breaking serve in the final game to take it 6-4. The second set presented a more difficult challenge. Medvedev moved ahead 4-2 and appeared ready to force a deciding set, but Buse responded by winning four consecutive games to complete the upset. Speaking after the match, Buse described the result as the biggest victory of his career. He said he had become increasingly comfortable playing on indoor hard courts and credited his patience during important points for helping him overcome one of the tour’s most experienced competitors. The result continued a remarkable 2026 season for Buse, who began the year inside the ATP top 100 and climbed as high as No. 30 in August. He has already captured two ATP singles titles this year, winning in Hamburg and Winston-Salem. His Paris campaign began Monday with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs. The win over Medvedev then secured a place among the final 16 players at the last Masters 1000 tournament of the season. Buse earned a third-round meeting with Portugal’s Nuno Borges, who advanced after defeating Russia’s Karen Khachanov. Borges entered the main draw as a lucky loser after initially falling in qualifying. Buse was not the only South American making headlines in Paris. Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry also produced a major upset Wednesday, defeating world No. 9 Alex de Minaur 7-6(2), 6-3. It was Etcheverry’s first career victory over a top-10 opponent after losing his previous 20 meetings against players in that group. The Argentine had already defeated Andrey Rublev in his opening match, but his tournament ended Thursday when Australian qualifier Rinky Hijikata rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory. Hijikata had eliminated seven-time Paris champion Novak Djokovic in the previous round. The unexpected results have reshaped the final Masters 1000 draw ahead of the ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled for November 15-22. For Buse, the victory over Medvedev stands as another important step in a season that has established him among Latin America’s leading young tennis players. His performance in Paris also strengthens his position heading toward the 2027 Australian Open.
