Pentagon to Hand Ukraine Aid Command to NATO Ally – Politico

The Pentagon plans to relinquish leadership of a Germany-based command coordinating weapons deliveries and training for Ukraine, Politico reported Friday. Another NATO member is expected to take over the Security Assistance Group–Ukraine, or SAG-U, within the next year. The Wiesbaden-based command was created in 2022 to coordinate military assistance, training and long-term planning for Ukraine’s armed forces. It operates alongside NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine mission. A European or Canadian officer could assume command, while a US officer would remain involved as deputy commander. The Pentagon said SAG-U was always intended to be temporary and described the move as part of efforts to shift more responsibility to European allies. The change would reduce Washington’s direct leadership role but would not end the mechanism delivering Western military support to Ukraine.
