Paws for a pint: Britain's most dog-friendly pubs revealed, from 'bark bangers' to kibble machines and canine menus

What better way to spend an afternoon than cosied up in a pub with a cold pint, a delicious roast dinner and your trusty canine companion by your side – with a tasty treat of their own to enjoy.And as proper pub season kicks off, dog lovers across the country will be delighted to learn that the nation's most pooch-friendly pubs have been officially revealed.As part of a nationwide search conducted by Rover, the world's largest online marketplace for pet care, expert tavern testers assessed 110 pubs with their four-legged companions to identify the top places for dogs and their owners to go. And there's good news for any furry friends in the north: the 'top dog' of all watering holes reviewed was declared a Newcastle-based establishment.A range of factors were taken into consideration, including booking systems, pup accessibility, atmosphere and staff communication.Canine facilities, pet safety, and the overall experience for their pooch were also measured.Here, we round up the fruits of their labour – with a pro-pooch pub in every region. 1. North East – The Brandling Villa, Newcastle The Brandling Villa, in Newcastle, has been named the 'top dog' for welcoming pooches out of all of the 110 pubs assessed by Rover Manager Charlie Cook celebrating the win with his four-legged friend VinnieJust outside of the city centre in South Gosforth, the Brandlling Villa came out top of the pubs assessed, impressing judges by putting four-legged friends at the heart of the pub experience. Scotland – Church on the Hill, Glasgow Church on the Hill, in Glasgow, was highly commended for its dog-friendly offeringsA Scottish-based pub bagged second place jointly with The Lion at Basford, Nottingham.Church on the Hill was highly commended for providing pooches with a warm welcome.The pub's website proudly states its 'dog friendly' status, as well as being a lively venue, with quizzes and karaoke on offer throughout the week. The menu includes classics such as a 1896 wagyu burger, an award-winning steak and ale pie and a selection of 14 beers on tap.3. East Midlands – The Lion at Basford, Nottingham The Lion at Basford is a Nottingham-based dog-friendly establishment The Lion at Basford, in Nottingham, secured joint second place in this year's rankings.Previously awarded the top prize on three separate occasions, it comes as no surprise that judges felt pups would be happy at the venue - particularly given its large beer garden for running around and playing fetch.The interior boasts bare brick walls, wooden features and there are ten cask lines to choose from. 4. Yorkshire – The Penny Hedge, Whitby The Penny Hedge, in Whitby, Yorkshire, proved to be a good stop to visit with dogsLocated in the beautiful Yorkshire town of Whitby, The Penny Hedge is the perfect place to stop by with a pooch after a long walk. The pub advertises itself as having a 'muddy paws welcome' policy – so dog owners can dine there without a worry about any adventures in mud that might have preceded a visit.The menu boasts plenty of delicious options for owners to enjoy – and for dogs to nab a bite of – such as minted lamb shank and the 'ultimate beef burger'.5. South East – Jolly Farmer, Worplesdon Jolly Farmer, in Worplesdon, welcomes pooches and their owners Jolly Farmer is a traditional countryside pub that welcomes four-legged friends and their owners alike. With ample outdoor seating and a promise of home-cooked food, the establishment certainly won't disappoint. It even makes sure to mention it is dog friendly on its website. 6. London – The Foxglove, Islington The Foxglove, located in Islington, London, is a well-loved dog-friendly establishment in the capitalTaking the crown for London is The Foxglove, located in the characterful borough of Islington.The charming establishment prides itself on 'craft beer, good vibes, and a dog-friendly space!' and emphasises 'you and your furry friends are always welcome'.The menu boasts a range of curries, such as chicken tikka masala and a special dal makhni, as well as hearty desserts including chocolate brownie. 7. West Midlands – Quill & Scholar, Lichfield The Quill & Scholar offers fresh water and dog treats for pooches that visit Over in Lichfield, the Quill & Scholar has been named the most dog-friendly pub in the whole of the West Midlands.
