Paul Thomas Anderson’s Cameron Winter At Carnegie Hall Concert Film Is Going On Tour

Last December, while shockwaves from Geese's album Getting Killed rippled through the world, that band's frontman Cameron Winter played what was apparently a momentous solo show at the storied New York venue Carnegie Hall. Winter played songs from his 2024 solo album Heavy Metal, as well as some unreleased ones. Paul Thomas Anderson, who was a few months away from finally winning his Oscars for One Battle After Another, was on hand to film the show. Today, PTA finally announces his long-awaited concert film Cameron Winter At Carnegie Hall. It's coming to theaters this fall, but it's not getting a wide release — not yet, anyway. Instead, the movie is going on tour.Earlier this week, Cameron Winter announced plans for his album Live At Carnegie Hall. Ariel Rechtshaid recorded and produced the music for that live album and also for the accompanying film, which will basically serve as Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another follow-up. That's not actually true. PTA is known for musician collaborations like his Thom Yorke short film Anima and all the Haim videos that he's directed, and those aren't considered part of his feature filmography, so this probably won't, either. Still, it's one of our all-time great directors, still at the peak of his powers, helming a concert film for one of our most exciting young musicians. This is cause for celebration.In addition to directing Cameron Winter At Carnegie Hall, Paul Thomas Anderson also shot it on 35mm and 16mm. Anderson co-produced it with Benny Safdie, who helped film the performance. Sara Murphy, Erica Frauman, and Maggie Ambrose are also on board as producers. Sadly, we don't even get a trailer yet. Instead, 35mm prints of Cameron Winter At Carnegie Hall will debut with Nov. 20 screenings in New York and Los Angeles, and they'll come to theaters around the US over the next few months — an old-fashioned roadshow for our current Letterboxd culture.
