Paul Finebaum: Alex Golesh, Auburn 'threw away' goodwill after Georgia upset win

Alex Golesh and Auburn have gone downhill since upsetting Georgia a few weeks ago and Paul Finebaum noted any good vibes around the program are already gone. In fact, he called the win over the Bulldogs “fluky.” Since then, the Tigers have been dominated 38-17 at the hands of LSU and 45-15 by Ole Miss the last two weekends. Normally a matchup with Arkansas on tap would be a little more exciting, but even Finebaum is ready to throw that one to the side. $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage “It’s hard to go too hyperbolic when two weeks ago we were sitting here talking about the biggest win in recent history at Auburn, but the problem is Alex Golesh and his staff managed to throw away that win,” Finebaum said on McElroy and Cubelic. “That’s gone. It’s a blip on the radar screen. After watching Georgia on Saturday, it’s pretty obvious it was fluky. It shows what a program is capable of in a given moment. “But what we saw Saturday, what we saw the previous Saturday, and what we’ve seen too often this year is just something that is discombobulated, and you can be as optimistic as you want, or you can be as pessimistic. But ultimately, I will not give Alex Golesh a high grade for this year because he had an opportunity to advance his program, and clearly somewhere along the line mistakes were made.” Finebaum noted the addition of several USF transfers, including QB Byrum Brown, did not quite pan out through eight games this year. It seemed good on paper, and there were some highlights, but everything has fizzled since the beginning of the season for Auburn. “Whether it was bringing too many players along, whether it was gambling on his quarterback, I really can’t tell you specifically … But what I do know is the mood of this Auburn Nation is about where it was a year ago,” Finebaum said. “They are deflated, they are disconsolate, and they are pretty ticked off, quite frankly. And that’s why they’re not so ticked off at Golesh, they’re just ticked off at the fact that everybody else seems to be in contention. Everybody else seems to have a pulse. “Whether it’s Kentucky, whether it’s Missouri, whether it’s Alabama playing a critical game, whether it’s their cross-state foe over in Georgia playing a critical game, but their season seems to be flatlining. I mean, they’ve got a game this week that let me just go ahead and flat out say very few people care about. I’m sure Auburn fans, loyal as they always are, will show up and try to do whatever they can. But this is one of the least significant games.”
