Passenger vehicle wholesales grow in double digits in September

Passenger vehicle wholesales continued to grow in double digits in September 2026, led by market leader Maruti Suzuki India on strong demand from car buyers.Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) sold 2,36,013 units in September, compared with 1,81,665 units a year earlier, registering a 24.43% year-on-year (YoY) growth.The total sales included domestic sales of 1,85,252 units, up 36.5% YoY; sales to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of 6,542 units, down 44%; and exports of 44,219 units, up 5%.Hyundai Motor India Ltd. (HMIL) reported wholesales of 77,916 units during the month, up 10.8% YoY. Domestic sales rose 10.9% to 57,166 units, while exports increased 10.4% to 20,750 units.“This number surpasses our previous record achieved in July 2026. The well-rounded growth across domestic and export markets is a testament to the strong appeal of our product portfolio and our commitment to delivering world-class mobility solutions in India and across global markets,” said Tarun Garg, MD and CEO, HMIL.“Going ahead, we are expecting sustained customer enthusiasm during the festive season, also supported by the opening of bookings for the Hyundai BAYON, our upcoming all-new nameplate for India,” he added.Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) reported total wholesales of 70,210 units in September, up 15% YoY. Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose 15% to 68,810 units, while exports grew 13% to 1,400 units. The wholesales figure includes electric vehicle sales.“We ended the quarter on a strong note, crossing the 70,000-unit sales milestone in September and look forward to carrying this momentum as we enter the festive period,” said Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.“Our greener powertrain portfolio continued to be a significant growth driver. Together, EV and CNG now contribute 51% of our sales, reflecting the rapid shift in customer preference towards greener mobility,” he said.“Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about the festive season, supported by a strong order book and healthy customer traction across the portfolio. As we progressively scale up production, our focus will be on fully leveraging this demand, sustaining our growth momentum and further strengthening our competitive position in the market,” he added.Mahindra & Mahindra’s automotive division recorded wholesales of 64,092 SUVs in September, up 14% YoY. Total vehicle sales, including exports, stood at 1,14,874 units, up 15%.“Adding to this momentum, we are proud to have crossed the milestone of 1 lakh billing of our Electric Origin SUVs since launch,” said Velusamy R., President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.JSW MG Motor India reported 8,018 units in wholesales in September, registering 19% YoY growth.“The strong performance reflects sustained consumer interest in the company’s product portfolio, including the recently launched MG Hector Tomahawk EV and PHEV,” the company said.
