(John Benson/cleveland.com)John Benson/cleveland.comBy John Benson, special to cleveland.comPARMA, Ohio -- The Current Year celebrates six years with a birthday bash taking place from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 10) at its 5580 Ridge Road location.“We opened on National Pierogi Day 2020 with a big Rudy’s pierogi party, so it’s only natural that we continue the tradition,” The Current Year co-owner Marie Stutz said in a press release. The adjoining Rudy’s Strudel will offer its famous dine-in hot pierogi bar during the event.“We’ve changed a lot since our opening day,” she said. “After adding tapes and other audio formats, we’ve generalized into a physical media store -- books, music, movies, magazines. “If it’s physical media, we’ve probably got it.”In addition to the affair kicking off the store’s annual food drive for local seniors, making an appearance will be Cleveland’s reigning horror hosts, The Mummy and the Monkey. The Hall of Fame Class of 2026 includes Arnie Boigner (Class 1987), Chris “Sparky B” Biller (Class of 1988), Mark Murphey (Class of 1988), Dr. Michael Valente (Class of 1997), Ryan Petkac (Class of 2002) and the 2001-2002 Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team. Brooklyn City Schools also recognizes Bob Hennings with the Ron Szudy School Community Engagement Award for his contributions and service on behalf of the district, the city and the nation. All inductees were nominated by Brooklyn citizens, faculty (current or retired), students and graduates -- and approved by the Hall of Fame Committee. “Whereas sometimes schools for their Hall of Fames are just strictly athletic, that’s not the case in Brooklyn, where we have different categories,” Brooklyn City Schools District Board Member Alison Rafter previously told cleveland.com. “Our inductees throughout the year put in the extra work to get to whatever they did in high school, but that also applies to their professional careers.“This is just very encouraging to young people -- be who you are, but at the same time, if you really want something in your life, you can go and you can get it.”Business Boost Initiative: Cuyahoga County is launching the Business Boost Initiative to provide financial assistance and resources to small businesses.The program provides $250,000 in grant funding, with awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, along with business engagement, resource navigation and technical assistance through the Office of Small Business.“Small businesses are the backbone of our neighborhoods and the cornerstone of our economy, so we need to do all we can to support them,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne in a press release. “Through the Business Boost Initiative, we are expanding access to funding and resources for even more entrepreneurs and small businesses across Cuyahoga County.” The initiative is intended to support small businesses and entrepreneurs by helping them to stabilize their business models and reduce the barriers to capital often faced by small businesses.
