Most read in Money A spokesperson for Whitbread told The Sun: “Whitbread has reached an agreement for the conditional sale of 53 Branded Restaurant sites to Queensway Inns, subject to a number of final conditions being met. “Queensway Inns has extensive experience operating hospitality businesses across the UK and intends to operate the sites as going concerns. “Subject to completion of the sale and following the relevant TUPE information and consultation processes, around 900 team members could transfer and will be supported through the process. “The proposed sale represents further progress against Whitbread’s Accelerating Growth Plan, first announced in April 2024. “April 2026 Whitbread announced a proposal to extend the programme to include all remaining Branded Restaurants and add a total of 3,600 new hotel extension rooms in locations with strong demand, whilst continuing to offer a great breakfast, dinner and drinks nationwide through the creation of new Premier Inn restaurants inside all hotels. “This mirrors the format which is already in operation in over half of Premier Inn hotels and is highly popular with hotel guests.” The Sun has approached Queensway for comment. What will happen to the sites not being bought? While punters may be excited about the opening of a new chain, questions still remain over the future of the 208 other sites set to shutter. The spree of closures will kick off on September 3, with Bar + Block, Table Table and Cookhouse + Pub to shut a combined total of 66 branches. Then come September 7, all 89 Brewers Fayre sites will close for good, bringing an end to a 45-year history in the UK. Anyone signed up to its reward system, which allows customers to earn points when they spend at a diner, to then be used as money off food, has until August 31 to use them up. Finally, on September 10 Beefeater will board up all 106 of its sites for good. The move marks the end of an era for the no-fuss steak and pub chains popular with families across the UK. It comes after boss Dominic Paul said the firm was forced into the desperate shakeup “in light of significant cost increases” sparked by then Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ hike in National Insurance and business rates. Under the five-year survival plan, the firm will also sell off 110 sites and convert others into 600 new hotel rooms to save £250million. It also plans to sell £1.5billion of freehold property to help fund future growth. A massive 3,800 job roles are also expected to be cut as part of the cull. Comment now
