Over 50 abortions for every prenatal visit: Why are we funding Planned Parenthood?

Ninety days of conversations. Ninety days of closed-door discussions between members. Ninety days of delay while the largest abortion business in America continues collecting taxpayer money and killing our youngest, most vulnerable citizens. On July 4, 2025, a one-year defunding of Planned Parenthood took effect under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. For 12 months, families were no longer forced to underwrite the nation’s abortion giant. That protection ended on July 4, 2026, and the funding was restored. In the three months since, Congress has done nothing but talk.Let’s do the math. In its last fiscal year, Planned Parenthood performed 434,000 abortions while receiving $832 million in taxpayer dollars. That works out to roughly $2.28 million every single day. Therefore, over the past 90 days, taxpayers have sent more than $205 million to an organization who continues lobbying for nationwide abortion until birth.Planned Parenthood doesn’t hide that abortion is its central enterprise. Year after year, the numbers confirm it. According to its 2024-25 Annual Report, the organization performed a record 434,450 abortions while providing a measly 7,685 in prenatal services, 2,852 instances of miscarriage care, and only 3,038 adoption referrals. That means Planned Parenthood ended 56 pregnancies for every one it helped continue through prenatal care, and performed 143 abortions for every adoption referral. When women came seeking help related to their pregnancy, 97% of the time they ended the life of their child, rather than receiving support to parent or place them for adoption.Tragically, over the last 25 years, Planned Parenthood has performed roughly 8 million abortions while offering just over 300,000 prenatal care services, a ratio of 24 abortions for every one prenatal visit, and has received more than $12 billion in taxpayer funding. And it doesn’t end with abortion. The organization also offers gender transition intervention such as puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones, particularly for minors, and has been flagged in federal reviews of anomalous billing for pediatric hormone therapies, all on the dime of the taxpayer. The fact that Medicaid dollars flow to Planned Parenthood makes this even more troubling. A recently published report has raised serious questions about Planned Parenthood’s use of taxpayer dollars and underscores why Vice President JD Vance has been right to demand greater scrutiny of waste, fraud, and abuse across our federal health programs.Medicaid exists to serve vulnerable people who need a hand up, not to subsidize the nation’s largest abortion business. If we are serious about protecting taxpayers and helping women and children thrive, we should be directing those dollars toward actual support for mothers and their babies, not an organization whose business model includes the elimination of innocent preborn children.Every abortion intentionally ends a unique human life. Every coerced or poorly informed decision leaves a woman to carry the weight of that decision alone. Every dime of public cash that flows to this giant makes ordinary people complicit in that harm.America, we can do better. Women facing unexpected pregnancies deserve real support such as housing, medical care, and job training, not a violent abortion procedure that ends their innocent child’s life. Children struggling with identity deserve careful care that protects their developing bodies and minds. Taxpayers deserve the right to refuse funding for an organization whose primary volume of “services” involves ending human lives. The temporary defunding in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act proved something important: it is possible. Congress can act. The question is whether they will choose to act again, and with permanency.Ninety days of conversation is enough. The time for polite delay has passed. Every additional day of funding is another day families are forced to bankroll the abortion industry during a time of record economic uncertainty.I urge every citizen who values life, who wants accountability for public funds, and who believes children deserve protection to contact our representatives today. Tell them the conversations must end and the funding must stop.OVER 2 MILLION PEOPLE ARE ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE OF ONE LAW — AND WASHINGTON WANTS TO KILL ITWe can love women and protect children at the same time. We can stand for life without turning our backs on women. And we can demand that our government stop forcing taxpayers to bankroll the nation’s largest abortion business. This isn’t about choosing between women and children. We can, and must, stand up for both.Defund Planned Parenthood. Our tax dollars, and our nation’s children, depend on it.Mark Wiltz is the director of government affairs at Live Action and resides in Maryland.
