Over 13,800 challans issued for traffic violations in Puducherry in August

Non-compliance with the helmet rule was the most common traffic violation reported during August. | Photo Credit: KUMAR SS The Puducherry Traffic Police issued over 13,800 challans for violations related to various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act during a special drive held in August. Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, D. Divya, in a release, said that 13,884 challans were issued during the drive held last month to enforce traffic rules. Emphasis was given to check violations that endanger the lives of road users and those that contribute significantly to road accidents, including riding without helmet, using mobile phone while driving, drunken driving, overspeeding, and rash/dangerous driving.Non-compliance with the helmet rule was the most common violation reported during the month. Of the total challans issued, 4,137 were issued for riding without a helmet, followed by 2,649 for wrong-side driving, 2,331 for driving while using phone, 1,323 for jumping red light, 174 for underage driving, and 171 for drunken driving. As many as 748 challans were issued for violating seat belt rules, 55 for using airhorn, and 2,073 for other offences, the release said.Case against parents“In cases involving underage drivers, the parents/guardians were summoned to the traffic police stations, counselled, and strictly warned against permitting minors to drive motor vehicles. Necessary legal action was initiated wherever warranted. Two FIRs were registered against parents for permitting minors to drive vehicles. The parents were also strictly advised not to repeat such violations in future,” she said.The Traffic police also registered three FIRs against drivers of heavy vehicles, for not adhering to entry-time restrictions in certain areas of the town. Strict enforcement and legal action will continue against such violations to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance road safety, the SSP said.The SSP said drunken driving and permitting minors to drive motor vehicles would continue to be dealt with strictly as such violations have the potential to cause serious road accidents.
