Outrage as beloved UK bowling alley to be DEMOLISHED to make way for a new Lidl supermarket

A BELOVED bowling alley is set to be demolished as residents protest against its closure. The alley has stood in the same site for more than 30 years. Although initially refused by Norwich City Council, the planning inspectorate overturned the decision, leading to the alley to be closed next year. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Residents have said the site has been a staple to the community for the more than 30 years, and disagree that the area needs another supermarket. They added that the town already had a Roy’s, an Aldi and a Sainsbury’s nearby. Objections also include concerns about the loss of a leisure facility and problems with parking and safe pedestrian access across a busy road. The initial proposal was lodged almost two years ago and has received backlash since. One resident said on Reddit: “The cost to social lives, entertainment, and the economy that the destruction of this venue will bring to Norwich is irreversible. “There is no need for an additional Lidl in the city and surrounding area.” Most read in The Sun Another added: “It’s not just a run down bowling alley, it’s a whole community.” The 30-lane alley currently offers a Student Night and After School Club, as well as an Arcade and Pool section. Philip Millward, director for Bandia Namco Amusements Europe Ltd, told Evening News 24: “We anticipate continuing to trade under the lease, which does not expire until June 2027.” There are currently already four Lidl stores in and around Norwich, including in Aylsham Road, Broadland Gate business park, Sprowston and Taverham.
