Our Last Chance to Save This Country Begins Today. Let’s Not Waste It.

2 min read(Optional Video Accompaniment to This Post)I honestly have nothing left to say.It is a decade now since the president came down the golden escalator and the country went straight to hell. All we've done as citizens of a self-governing democratic republic is squabble over the seating in the handbasket. Until Tuesday. Tuesday was nut-cutting time. Tuesday felt—and probably rightly—like the beginning of an extended last chance of which the country will have to spend every waking hour.Just on Monday, the president closed out his demented road show with a weird address in front of one of his administration's most conspicuous blunders: the Reflecting Pool. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, with his carefully manufactured conservative majority, gave the boot to his latest attempt to ratfck the California elections, and the Court did so without even the hint of an explanation. Then the president capped a rich, full day by bombing an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, although I guess he went a little bananas on his little boutique website.Mama said there'd be days like this. But she never said there'd be so many. And all the rest of them are on us. If I can offer one piece of advice it would be this: Ignore anything written that references the 2028 presidential election. If things break the way the polls say they will, there will be so much concentration required to do what we can to ameliorate the damage this administration has done and is capable of doing over the next two years. Starting the 2028 horse-race coverage this week would be yet another crime against poor, battered journalism. As the late Senator Edward Kennedy told a Democratic convention long ago:And someday, long after this convention, long after the signs come down, and the crowds stop cheering, and the bands stop playing, may it be said of our campaign that we kept the faith. May it be said of our party in 1980 that we found our faith again. And may it be said of us, both in dark passages and in bright days, in the words of Tennyson that my brothers quoted and loved, and that have special meaning for me now:“I am a part of all that I have metTho much is taken, much abidesThat which we are, we are—One equal temper of heroic heartsstrong in willTo strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end. For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.Run through the tape, America. Finish the race.
