SchubertROW-PicturesWalkerWorm-FilmGerald_Kerkletz Austria has entered the 2027 Oscar race, picking the Sandra Hüller period drama Rose to represent the country in the best international feature category. In the black-and-white drama from director Markus Schleinzer, Hüller plays Rose, a woman in rural Germany in the 17th Century who passer herself off as a male farmer to have a life otherwise proscribed for a women at the time. Schleinzer’s fictionalized composite character was based on hundreds of comparable cases from the time. Rose premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, with Hüller winning the Silver Bear for Best Lead Performance. Mubi is releasing the film in North America and multiple international territories, including the U.K., Italy, Australia and Latin America. The Match Factory is handling sales worldwide. Hüller received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Anatomy of a Fall in 2024. She also starred in Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning Zone of Interest the same year. Her international breakthrough came with Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann (2016), which was Oscar nominated in the Best International Feature category. Hüller starred alongside Ryan Gosling in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary and headlines Paweł Pawlikowski’s Vaterland, which premiered in Cannes and is considered a strong awards-season contender. AMPAS will announce the 15 films on the Best International Feature Film shortlist on Dec. 15. The five nominees will be announced Jan. 21, 2027.
