OpenAI is releasing a big update to the ChatGPT desktop app today that introduces GPT Voice mode for talking through work to complete tasks. The new feature is powered by GPT-Live, OpenAI’s upgraded voice mode that arrived on mobile this month. You can now talk to complete work with ChatGPT on Mac More details from the app update’s release notes today: Powered by GPT-Live, ChatGPT Voice lets you talk through work and coordinate tasks in Chat, Work, and Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app. Start a new chat or task in voice mode, then ask ChatGPT to start, check, or steer work in other threads. While ChatGPT Voice is available on both macOS and Windows, Mac users can enjoy one more capability with Appshots. When used with ChatGPT Voice, Appshots lets ChatGPT reference the active window in focus for better context. ChatGPT Voice also works with OpenAI’s highly capable Computer Use feature, local files, and ChatGPT plugins. The release notes clarify that voice is supported on OpenAI plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise on desktop. The new voice mode also works with ChatGPT’s Remote feature on iOS. It's powered by GPT-Live, so it can speak, listen, and coordinate work in the app at the same time.Rolling out globally today… pic.twitter.com/ODZWKqecCf— OpenAI (@OpenAI) July 23, 2026 Additionally, this week’s ChatGPT desktop app update improves how project folders work. Local projects in the ChatGPT desktop app can now include multiple related folders. From a project’s menu, select Edit project to add folders and choose the primary folder. New chats, Git operations, and automatic discovery of AGENTS.md, skills, and config.toml use the primary folder. Secondary folders remain available for file search, reading, and editing. GPT-Live makes the conversation feel alive, and Codex gives it the power to act. Anything you can do with Codex, you can now drive through voice. I’ve been living with it for a few weeks, and I never want to interact with AI any other way again. pic.twitter.com/uG4Yfxz4Z1— Guinness Chen (@guinnesschen) July 23, 2026 9to5Mac’s Take People still have strong feelings about the Codex app essentially becoming the new ChatGPT desktop app and adding ChatGPT Work. While the recent app updates don’t really help with the native Mac app feel (and size), it’s good to see OpenAI add modern features to the new Mac app. Voice mode was removed from the old Mac app a while ago, and it never gained the new GPT-Live version that ChatGPT for iPhone and iPad offers. As of today, the Mac now has a first-class voice mode again, and it’s more capable than before.
