OpenAI brings GPT-5.6 Terra and Luna to India, keeping AI processing in the country

The company says GPT-5.6 Luna costs up to 80 per cent less and GPT-5.6 Terra up to 20 per cent less following OpenAI's latest price reductions. Why bringing OpenAI models to India mattersThe biggest part of this announcement is not simply that Indian companies can now access OpenAI models. It is where the AI processing happens.When a person asks an AI model a question, the request has to be processed by computers running the model. For businesses handling sensitive information, where that processing takes place can matter a lot. With in-country inferencing, AWS says OpenAI model inference through Amazon Bedrock is processed on AWS infrastructure in India. That gives Indian businesses another option for using advanced AI while continuing to work with the security, governance and operational controls they already use on AWS.Amazon Bedrock also gives businesses access to multiple AI models through a single API. In less technical terms, companies don't necessarily have to completely change the way they build their AI applications every time they want to try a different model. They can choose the model that makes the most sense for a particular job.That could mean using Terra for regular business tasks and Luna when a company needs to handle a much larger number of requests at a lower cost.The use cases are wide-ranging. Indian companies could use the models to write and review software, analyse large amounts of information, generate reports, automate document-heavy processes and build AI agents that can handle multi-step tasks. Banks and healthcare companies could use them for workflows such as KYC verification, document processing and regulatory work, while businesses with millions of customers could use Luna for chatbots and other high-volume applications.For the average person, this announcement may not immediately change how they use ChatGPT. This is primarily an enterprise-focused launch.
