Sunny Deol's upcoming film Batwara 1947 has received an Adults-Only (A) certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), making it one of the relatively few films in the actor's four-decade career to get a restricted rating. According to the CBFC's official website, the Rajkumar Santoshi directorial has been certified with a runtime of 145 minutes and 34 seconds - two hours, 25 minutes and 34 seconds.The certificate is in keeping with the film's subject. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947, Batwara 1947 is centred on the communal violence and human tragedy of the period. The rating is notable because Deol's films have generally been aimed at family audiences, even when they have included action and violence, and adult certificates have remained uncommon across his 43-year career.As per trade website Sacnilk, only six of Deol's films in the last 26 years have received an A certificate: Champion (2000), Farz (2001), Karz: The Burden of Truth (2002), Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002), Mohalla Assi (2018), and Chup (2022). There was also a 16-year gap between 2002 and 2018 during which none of his releases carried an adults-only rating, making Batwara 1947 a departure from his usual commercial outings. The film reunites Deol with director Rajkumar Santoshi, with whom he has worked on several films over the years. Producer Aamir Khan is also associated with the project, and reports have suggested that he may make a supporting appearance in the film. The ensemble cast includes Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol.Batwara 1947 is adapted from Syed Asghar Wajahat's play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya. The story follows a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore after Partition and moves into a haveli allotted to them. There, they find an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave the home she has lived in for decades.
