Only 41% of census enumeration completed in Tiruchi city

About 41% of the enumeration work under the first phase of the Census 2027 exercise has been completed within the Tiruchi Corporation limits with officials racing against the August 30 deadline to finish the remaining work. The Corporation has been divided into 1,728 blocks for the exercise. Enumeration has been completed in around 712 blocks while work remains in the remaining 1,016 blocks as of August 24.The first phase, being conducted from August 1 to 30, focuses on house listing and housing-related details. Enumerators are collecting information on housing conditions, availability of basic amenities such as drinking water, and household assets through door-to-door visits. The Corporation has appointed 30 supervisors and 1,850 enumerators for the field-level exercise. Each supervisor is expected to oversee enumeration covering around 200 to 250 households. Training programmes were conducted for both supervisors and enumerators before the commencement of the exercise.Officials said the initial 15 days of the exercise witnessed a slowdown, mainly because schoolteachers appointed as enumerators did not report for duty as expected. Further, some enumerators were able to take up the work only during the afternoons and after school hours, affecting the pace of the exercise. The Corporation has intensified efforts to complete the exercise within the stipulated timeframe. Enumerators who have completed their assigned blocks have been instructed to assist in covering the remaining areas. “The process showed improvement during the weekend. We expect the upcoming government holiday on August 26 to help speed up the enumeration,” said a senior official. The information collected by enumerators is subsequently verified and updated on the Census portal. The first phase will be followed by the collection of detailed demographic information, including comprehensive individual and caste-related details. Published - August 24, 2026 07:51 pm IST
