One owner, two finalists and a remarkable legacy

MUSCAT: There was something uniquely fitting about this year’s Oman D50 final. Yalla Shabab Giants lifted the trophy, but even if rivals Royal Oman Stallions had won, one thing was certain—the trophy would have remained within the cricketing set-up of Chaitanya Khimji, the owner of both Premier Division teams.For the second successive year, Khimji’s Yalla Shabab Giants stormed into the Oman D50 final, providing a striking snapshot of a remarkable journey that has seen his sides repeatedly challenge for honours across Oman’s domestic cricket landscape. Affectionately known as Chaitanya Bhai, his association with cricket stretches back to his playing and academy days. His involvement has since developed into a sustained commitment to building competitive teams, developing players and creating squads capable of challenging consistently across formats.The numbers tell much of the storyIn the 2021-22 season, Yalla Shabab Giants, then known as Ruwi Rangers, captured both the Oman D10 and D20 titles, while Royal Oman Stallions, formerly Amerat Royals, won the Oman D50 championship.The following season brought two more runners-up finishes for Stallions in the Oman D10 and D50 competitions.The 2023-24 campaign was another productive one. Stallions won the Oman D10 title and the Premier League 50-over championship, while Giants claimed the Oman D20 crown and finished runners-up in the D50 competition.Success continued in 2024-25. Stallions retained the Oman D10 title, while Giants finished runners-up. Giants then went on to win the 50-over Premier League and Oman D50 titles, with Stallions finishing runners-up in both competitions.The 2025-26 season added further silverware. Giants were crowned Premier 50-over champions, while Stallions finished runners-up in the Oman D20 and Premier 50-over competitions. Giants also continued their successful run in the Oman Super League, winning both the D20 and 50-over titles.Then came the 2026-27 Oman D50 campaign, with the two Khimji-owned sides reaching the final for the second year running.It was a remarkable repeat of last year’s title clash, again bringing two teams from the same cricketing stable face-to-face for the biggest prize. Giants eventually prevailed to retain the championship, but the significance of the occasion extended beyond the result.For Chaitanya, the emphasis has consistently been on building teams that can sustain success rather than relying on one-off campaigns.His approach has included strengthening squads, creating depth and putting in place a management and coaching structure designed to help players develop and compete at a high level.Vinu Mathew has served as team manager, with Prashanth Chandran as head coach, forming part of the support structure around the teams.Chaitanya has previously summed up his approach to success by stressing the importance of continuity and teamwork, saying: “Back-to-back titles are never an accident; they are the rewards for discipline, belief and relentless teamwork.”That philosophy is reflected in the consistency of his teams across seasons.From Amerat Royals and Ruwi Rangers to Royal Oman Stallions and Yalla Shabab Giants, the names have evolved, but the presence in title races has remained.The significance also extends to the wider domestic game. Competitive teams provide players with regular opportunities to perform at a high level, creating greater depth for Oman’s cricketing structure and a pathway for players to push towards national selection.The latest D50 final therefore represented more than another trophy in the cabinet.And with the story still being written, the 2026-27 season has added another memorable chapter to Chaitanya’s remarkable journey in Oman cricket.
