Even after the timeline complications introduced by X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jean remained one of the most recognizable mutant characters associated with that universe. Because of that history, her exclusion from Doomsday initially felt strange. Jean Grey is one of the most important mutants in Marvel history, particularly when stories involving universe-ending power levels are involved. That isn't necessarily impossible. The MCU has successfully balanced multiple versions of characters before. Spider-Man: No Way Home featured three Peter Parkers, while Deadpool & Wolverine embraced alternate variants with enthusiasm. Still, those stories were built around the concept of multiple versions existing together. With Jean Grey, Marvel may want audiences focused on Sink's interpretation rather than dividing attention between the past and future of the character. If the studio believes Jean will become a cornerstone mutant moving forward, keeping the spotlight on the new version starts to make strategic sense. Audiences can absolutely argue that Janssen deserved one final appearance alongside her fellow original X-Men stars. Given her contributions to the franchise, that's a fair position. However, the existence of a newly introduced MCU Jean Grey at least provides a reasonable explanation for why Marvel might have chosen a different path. Anna Paquin's take on the character was a major part of the original trilogy and remains closely associated with Fox's X-Men era. While Rogue's role fluctuated throughout the series, she was still one of the franchise's most important mutant heroes. The lack of these characters creates an imbalance that is difficult to ignore. Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, and several other major male characters continue to receive attention, while some of the franchise's most iconic female heroes are left on the sidelines. Of course, Marvel may still be keeping surprises hidden. Avengers: Doomsday is exactly the kind of project where secret appearances and unannounced cameos are expected. Until the movie actually arrives, it would be unwise to completely rule out additional mutant appearances. Still, based on what has been officially revealed, the missing female X-Men remain one of the film's biggest disappointments. When Will Sadie Sink's Jean Grey Return? Assuming Marvel has bigger plans for Sadie Sink's Jean Grey, the most logical place for her next major appearance is Avengers: Secret Wars. The upcoming crossover is widely expected to push the MCU's multiverse storyline to its ultimate conclusion. If Doomsday is the event that brings realities crashing together, Secret Wars seems likely to deal with the aftermath and establish Marvel's future status quo. That makes it the ideal project for introducing characters who will define Marvel's next era. Jean Grey fits that description perfectly. Marvel has spent years building toward a more complete integration of mutants into the MCU. While mutant characters have appeared in various forms already, the franchise still hasn't fully established its own long-term X-Men team. Many expect Secret Wars to serve as the bridge between the Multiverse Saga and a future heavily focused on mutants. If that happens, Sink's Jean Grey could become one of the key figures leading that transition.
