One of Netflix's biggest action movies of all time is officially getting a sequel. The biggest standalone action movie ever released on Netflix will now be getting a sequel, with new details having been revealed about its ongoing development. Netflix action movies have been a staple of the platform for quite some time, with more recent titles gaining global traction over the years. This includes everything from the Extraction movies to more recent standalone titles, like War Machine starring Alan Ritchson. But there's one movie that came out within the last few years that became a global phenomenon, becoming one of the platform's most successful action movies ever made. According to Deadline, a sequel to 2025's Ad Vitam is now in the works at Netflix, with principal photography officially beginning today, August 10, 2026. The sequel to one of Netflix's most-watched action movies ever will see Guillaume Canet return as former GIGN operator Franck Lazareff. Currently going by the title Ad Vitam Eternam, the sequel follows Franck after his release from prison at the end of the previous movie, only to be nearly killed by an assassin. Determined to uncover his assailant, he strikes a deal with the French government for a mission that will offer him the truth. Check out the full synopsis below: After surviving an assassination attempt upon his release from prison, Franck sets out to find out who wants him dead. He goes to hide away with his family in the mountains. But French intelligence services track him down and offer him a deal: a covert mission in exchange for the truth Franck is seeking. Ludovic Colbeau-Justin (How To Make A Killing) will be taking over as director, while star Canet co-wrote the screenplay alongside writers Maxime Chattam and David Corona. In terms of returning cast members from the first Ad Vitam movie, Stéphane Caillard, Nassim Lyes, Zita Hanrot will all be reprising their roles as Léo, Ben, and Manon respectively. New cast members include Nicolas Duvauchelle, Sophie Marceau and Mathieu Amalric, whose roles are currently undisclosed. Canet and Jean Cottin's Cabanes Productions serve as producers. The first movie was released to Netflix January 10, 2025, the French-language film quickly soaring up the charts for the platform. As of writing, Ad Vitam is the Number 9 most-watched non-English language movie of all time on the platform, clocking in with 103 million hours watched across 63.1 million views. Not only does it make the movie one of the most popular on the platform, but also one of the most popular action movies released to Netflix. This record-breaking level of success all but ensured a sequel would happen. The returning cast of Ad Vitam and newcomers are currently filming the sequel, with plans for the movie to be shot in Ile-de-France, Normandy, Savoie and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The diverse locations signal a major follow-up that will see Franck's journey expand following the end of the first movie. For now, though, it's unclear how well the next film will measure up quality-wise: Ad Vitam currently holds a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and a 32% from audience members. The creative overhaul with Colbeau-Justin replacing previous director Rodolphe Lauga means Ad Vitam's sequel will have a similar yet distinctive feel in its approach. It's a promising continuation of the original action movie's story, and one that indicates an even deeper focus for Netflix on action-centric titles. As production continues, more details of the sequel will likely be revealed, confirming just how similar to the first film it'll really be. Release Date January 10, 2025 Cast Guillaume Canet Franck Lazareff Runtime 97 minutes Director Rodolphe Lauga Writers Rodolphe Lauga, Guillaume Canet
