One of Europe’s cheapest cities is getting a new £7.63billion airport

A POPULAR European city break destination is set to get a new airport within the next decade. Plans are currently underway in Portugal to build a new airport near Lisbon, around 31 miles from the centre of the city. There will be 120 aircraft parking spots, 64 gates and 76 bridges at the airport, allowing it to handle up to 56million passengers a year, rising to 85million by 2082. The new airport would replace Humberto Delgado Airport and is planned to open in 2037, but could be as early as 2034. Read more on travel inspo In a YouTube video showing what the new airport could look like, a spokesperson states: “From the moment you arrive at the terminal, every stage of the journey is designed to be simple, intuitive, and comfortable. “Featuring smart, innovative solutions and technology that ensures a seamless experience with information always at hand. “An airport that is more efficient, better connected, more intuitive, and distinctly Portuguese.” Alongside the new airport, Portugal is investing €400million (£343million) in its existing airports including Porto, Faro and Funchal airports. Then at Porto there will be 14 new aircraft positions and at Faro, there will be new boarding gates as well as an expanded check-in area. Back in March, TravelSupermarket found that the Portuguese capital was home to the cheapest five-star European city holidays, costing under £310 per person. And in May, The Post Office Travel Money’s City Cost Barometer found Lisbon to have the second cheapest beers in Europe, costing around £2.02 a pint on average. Comment now
