Jones helped the United States defeat Spain 82-73 in the championship game of the 2026 FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup on Sunday in Brno, Czechia. The victory completed an undefeated tournament for Team USA and secured the program’s fourth consecutive U17 World Cup title. It was the United States’ seventh championship in the eight editions of the event, and Jones played an important role throughout the team’s run to gold. Jones Helps Team USA Survive a Championship Thriller After controlling most of its first six games, Team USA faced its greatest challenge of the tournament against Spain. The United States led 27-23 after the opening quarter, but Spain remained within striking distance throughout the game. Spain eventually moved ahead 73-71 with less than five minutes remaining, putting Team USA’s championship streak in danger. The Americans responded by scoring the final 11 points of the game to escape with an 82-73 victory. Jones started and played 31 minutes, her largest workload of the tournament. She finished with eight points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal while making four free throws. The future Commodore started each of Team USA’s final five games and remained on the court during the most competitive game of its championship run. She recorded nine points, five assists and three rebounds in just 19 minutes. Jones made both of her two-point attempts and finished 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Her five assists were her highest total of the tournament and offered an early look at the playmaking ability she will bring to Shea Ralph’s backcourt. Jones consistently helped Team USA create quality scoring opportunities without needing to dominate the ball. The 5-foot-10 guard contributed nine points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block. It was her most complete performance of the tournament, with Jones making an impact as a scorer, distributor and defender. Her four steals were a tournament high, while her five rebounds matched her best mark of the event. Jones finished the game with a plus-40 rating in only 18 minutes. The performance also helped Jones establish herself in Team USA’s starting lineup. She started every game from the Latvia matchup through the gold-medal victory over Spain. Jones Delivers Her Best Scoring Performance Jones’ biggest offensive game came in the Round of 16 against Mexico. She scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in Team USA’s 112-36 victory. Jones made three of her five attempts from beyond the arc while adding four assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block. Her 15 points were the most she scored in any game during the World Cup. She also completed the performance without committing a turnover. Jones scored or assisted on 23 points in just 20 minutes, helping the United States advance comfortably into the quarterfinals. A Consistent Contributor Throughout the Tournament Jones finished the World Cup averaging 6.9 points, 3.1 assists, 2.7 rebounds and one steal across seven games. She recorded 48 points, 22 assists and 19 rebounds while playing a little more than 21 minutes per contest. Her 3.1 assists per game ranked second on Team USA, trailing only Morghan Reckley. Jones also finished the tournament with more than three times as many assists as turnovers, recording 22 assists against only seven turnovers. Her contributions were not limited to scoring. Jones handled the ball, defended multiple positions and helped connect an offense filled with some of the best young players in the country. What We Learned About Jones’ Fit at Vanderbilt Beyond the medal and the final statistics, the tournament offered Vanderbilt fans their best look yet at what Jones can add to Ralph’s offense. Jones showed confidence as both an outside shooter and a slasher. She was comfortable stepping into open 3-pointers, highlighted by her 3-of-5 performance against Mexico, but she was not content to remain on the perimeter. Jones consistently looked to attack the basket, using her size and athleticism to get into the paint and draw contact. That combination is exactly what Vanderbilt needed to add this offseason. Last season, Mikayla Blakes often felt like the only Vanderbilt player consistently trying to get to the basket. Aubrey Galvan began attacking the paint more frequently down the stretch, but the Commodores still needed another perimeter player capable of putting pressure on the defense off the dribble. Jones should provide that immediately. Defenders will have to respect her outside shot, opening opportunities for her to attack closeouts and get downhill. Her ability to score in both ways should also make it easier for her to play alongside Galvan and Blakes without limiting the spacing in Ralph’s offense. After watching Jones throughout the World Cup, I have seen enough to make her my pick to start at the three for Vanderbilt this season. There will naturally be an adjustment period for any freshman entering the SEC, but Jones already looks capable of filling one of the biggest needs on the roster. A starting perimeter group of Galvan, Blakes and Jones would give Vanderbilt three players who can handle the ball, create off the dribble and play alongside one another. Jones’ willingness to attack the basket, combined with her confidence from beyond the arc, could make her a fantastic addition to Ralph’s offense from the moment she arrives on campus. Another Gold Medal Before Arriving at Vanderbilt The U17 World Cup championship is Jones’ second gold medal in as many summers. She also helped the United States win the 2025 FIBA U16 Women’s AmeriCup, where she averaged eight points, 3.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds. Jones will now prepare for her freshman season at Vanderbilt as a member of a highly anticipated recruiting class. Before playing her first game inside Memorial Gymnasium, she has already earned two gold medals representing the United States. Now, Jones will have an opportunity to bring the shooting, versatility and willingness to attack that she displayed on the international stage to West End.
