Letters to the EditorOhio TV stations profit from campaign ads while misleading claims go uncheckedAs we Ohioans are again inundated with campaign commercials, some with misleading statements and others with outright lies, where’s the independent fact checking? Freedom of speech shouldn’t also mean candidates have the freedom to lie in the effort to be elected.Local television stations get rich when elections near, selling out their available commercial time. Virtually all of those stations also have news divisions, focused on fair and accurate reporting. Since each operates in the “public interest, convenience and necessity,” isn’t it imperative for stations airing campaign advertising to report questionable statements and call out the candidates making them? I’m not suggesting censorship, but clarifying for viewers what may be terribly misleading or outright prevarication. Put some of those advertising dollars received into factual reporting.Robert Olive,Avon Lake
