Sign in to your ScreenRant account The news that Prime Video’s Off Campus arrives surprisingly early in 2027's streaming release calendar proves that one industry trend may finally be changing for the better. As anyone who waited over three years for Stranger Things season 5 can attest, the long gaps between seasons of streaming shows can be truly infuriating. These gaps can result in absurd hype build-up, which can then lead to disappointment once shows finally arrive. Even though some traditional network and cable shows like The Walking Dead would have benefited from the shorter seasons of streaming formats, the trade-off of longer waits between seasons can be a real drag for fans. The long wait for Wednesday season 3 already means that the show, despite being based in a magic school, is fast-forwarding to the title character’s senior year to avoid its 24-year-old star, Jenna Ortega, playing a 16-year-old. This is why it is good, if surprising, news that one of Prime Video’s biggest new shows will return less than a year after its debut. The college-set romance show Off Campus season 2 is releasing in April 2027, which is less than 12 months after its May 2026 debut. Based on the novel series of the same name by author Elle Kennedy, Off Campus season 1 focused on the rocky road to romance between Belmont Cameli’s ice hockey star Garrett Graham and Ella Bright’s floundering music major Hannah Wells. Off Campus Season 2 Releases Less Than A Year After The Show Debuted On Prime Video In a clever twist, Off Campus season 1 shifted the focus of its story to a blossoming secret romance between two of the couple’s friends, Mika Abdalla’s Allie and Stephen Kalyn’s Dean, before the first outing finished. While the finale returned to Garret and Ella’s story, this meant that Off Campus season 1 gave viewers a clue to season 2’s story and, thus, a reason to tune into the sophomore outing of the show. This trick was borrowed from Netflix’s smash hit romance adaptation Bridgerton, which hinted at the next season’s love story to avoid a common problem in TV adaptations of romance novels. Since romance novels traditionally end with a happily ever after conclusion for the main couple, shows based on these books risk giving viewers little reason to stick around. Pointing toward the next couple’s struggles is a clever workaround. In the case of Off Campus, the book series that the show is based on has five novels to date, so the creators of the show knew there was no shortage of material for future outings. Furthermore, while it might not have been quite as ambitious as Mike Flanagan’s upcoming five-season Dark Tower show, Off Campus did secure a second season renewal before season 1 of the show had even premiered. This meant there were no delays in production between seasons. Off Campus' Return Timeline Avoids A Growing Streaming Trend Credit: Prime Video via MovieStillsDB The ability to shoot seasons 1 and 2 back to back, or close to that, gave Off Campus the confidence to hit the ground running and set up season 2’s entire storyline before ending season 1. Long gaps between seasons of streaming shows have become common, but that's not the case here, and this could mark an industry-wide shift judging by how popular Off Campus is with both critics and viewers alike. Although shows with massive budgets like Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings prequel The Rings of Power will likely always need multiple years between outings, this is not necessarily an inevitability for every show, as Off Campus has proven. The fact that seasons 2 and 3 of Disney’s huge Rick Riordan adaptation Percy Jackson & The Olympians cost hundreds of millions and still only featured a one-year gap between outings proves that Off Campus season 2 could set the new norm for the streaming landscape going forward.
