Ofcom has been accused of covering up data that shows GB News is more trusted by its viewers than the BBC GB News was handed a £100,000 fine in 2024 for breaching impartiality rules in a programme featuring Rishi Sunak.It followed an appearance by Mr Sunak on a broadcast called People's Forum: The Prime Minister, where he was asked questions by a studio audience.An earlier investigation by Ofcom found that 'an appropriately wide range of significant viewpoints was not presented and given due weight'.The regulator also ruled that GB News had breached the broadcasting code during a programme fronted by Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg.But they secured a major victory after the High Court overturned the decision last year.Reacting to accusations of a cover-up, an Ofcom spokesman said: 'An administrative error led to a short delay in publishing the underlying data for this year's report, which we corrected as soon as we became aware.'More broadly, not all of the vast amounts of data we produce can be included in the main report, which focused on our key findings.'GB News bosses will likely view the latest survey as evidence for their claim that the station deserves to be ranked as a 'trusted' news source.The Government is weighing up new measures mandating social media apps to prioritise content from 'trusted' news providers.This prompted immediate fears that the Government would have increased control over where people get their news. It ranked public service broadcasters – the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – as 'among the most trusted news sources' in a June White Paper, omitting GB News.Bosses from the station have written to ministers arguing it should have the chance to apply for public funding instead of taxpayer money heading straight into the coffers of the BBC. GB News is the most-watched non-public service broadcaster this year, with just under 90,000 average daily viewers, according to official ratings agency Barb.The channel has also been in hot water over claims it has offered a platform for conspiracy theories, while one guest compared the Pride campaign with paedophilia and bestiality.
