Sign in to your TheGamer account After quickly becoming one of 2026’s highest rated games, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake is unsurprisingly in the process of being review-bombed. Considering the original Ocarina of Time still holds the top spot on Metacritic’s top-rated games of all time after nearly 30 years, it’s no surprise that the recently released remake has been an instant critical darling. As of the time of writing, it’s following in the original’s footsteps by being 2026’s highest-rated game so far, a crown that only GTA 6 has a chance of stealing. Even though The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved series in all of gaming and always has been, those high scores have made the remake a new target for review bombers wanting to drag it down from its pedestal. In a nice twist, though, it looks like Zelda fans are having none of it and are actively fighting back against the naysayers. Apparently A Remake Doesn’t “Merit Excessive Praise” As pointed out by Redditor Kikisilvania in a post on the Zelda subreddit that’s been removed for arbitrary reasons, the Ocarina of Time remake’s Metacritic page has recently seen an influx of negative reviews, with 187 as of the time of writing. While it’s fair that not everyone is going to love Ocarina of Time, the reviews and their justifications seem very insincere. Many of the negative reviews call the game “outdated” and pin the positive reception on nostalgia from those wearing “rose tinted glasses”, a phrase that comes up more than once. Others make it clear that this is a response to Zelda being the highest-rated game of the year, including one that tries to suggest reviewers feel pressured to praise it like the original. To be fair, there are some complaints mentioned that I’ve been seeing around, like the dialogue changes and character designs. It still seems like a lot to give a flat zero, though. There also seems to be some distaste for a remake getting such glowing reviews and coming out on top over wholly new games. One user points out that a “faithful port of an existing work” that doesn’t add anything new “does not merit excessive praise”. If that doesn’t show what this is all about, I don’t know what to tell you. As you can probably tell from the still incredibly high user review score, the review bomb attempt isn’t exactly going well. Beyond the fact that there simply aren’t enough negative reviews to make a dent, Zelda fans have come in swinging with over 6,000 positive reviews, some of which outright say they’re doing so to fight the bombing. It looks like Ocarina of Time’s review score isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
