Sign in to your TheGamer account Now that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake has launched, dataminers have been able to confirm its codename, which was actually discovered some time ago. Nintendo has to be the most interesting gaming company to follow. Part of that is thanks to its stellar track record and extensive library of beloved series, but it’s mostly because you simply can’t predict what it’s going to do next. It’s been proven time and time again that Nintendo always has more games in the works than you might think. From Fire Emblem Engage to Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, there are plenty of examples of Nintendo sitting on games until it’s ready to reveal or release them. You’d think something as big as the Ocarina of Time remake wouldn’t be included in that lineup, but a recent datamine confirms that it was actually found a little over two years ago. Animal Crossing Fans Are Weeping Two years ago, in September of 2024, Twitter user and dataminer OctaDatamine shared a tweet revealing that they’d found a new project name for an EPD5 game. The project was codenamed “Owl”, which led them to believe that it had something to do with Animal Crossing since EPD5 is the team that handles that series. As it turns out, that actually wasn’t the case at all. Earlier today, Twitter user OatmealDome revealed that, through datamining, they’d discovered that the mysterious project Owl is actually the Ocarina of Time remake. They went on to say that it uses Nintendo’s ModuleSystem game engine, and theorised that it was built off Tears of the Kingdom. Owl makes a lot of sense as a codename for Ocarina of Time since it’s clearly referencing Kaepora Gaebora. It’s a very interesting twist considering that codename was said to be an EPD5 project, when it’s actually from EPD3, the team that handles all of the Zelda games. It’s not clear what the mix-up here is, but it’s funny to think that we’ve technically known about the most-requested Zelda remake for more than two years now. It’s also a little depressing for any Animal Crossing fans who took that initial tweet as a sign that a new game was already in the works. There’s no doubt that Nintendo is surely working on a new Animal Crossing after the massive success of New Horizons, but it’s definitely not under the codename Owl.
