OA’s FBI Season 9 Replacement Continues A Dick Wolf Tradition

CBS' FBI is on the way back to primetime for season 9, but the new cases this fall won't be business as usual for Maggie and the rest of the JOC at 26 Fed. After the season 8 finale ended with OA leaving his team to go undercover, Maggie needs a new partner. He'll be brand new to the show, rather than Scola or Jubal stepping in. The new agent will be played by a familiar face for any viewers who have watched the wider Dick Wolf TV universe over the years, which has been a trend for many years. FBI is set to return to primetime on Monday, October 5, with CBS moving the drama back to its previous 8 p.m. ET time slot. The cancellations of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International mean that it won't be followed by a full night of Dick Wolf TV action, but Tom Ellis and Nick Gehlfuss' CIA will follow at 9 p.m. ET on Mondays. Zeeko Zaki will still be part of the FBI cast, but the situation is going to be very different. Season 8 ended with OA seemingly getting himself fired by ADIC Lawrence Green after snapping, with no grander plan in mind. He had a larger purpose, however, which involved accepting a job at the Department of Defense for Anna Vorpe. The whole ordeal was a plan that involved Maggie and Isobel, with the goal of investigating Anna's crimes. As a result, OA won't be part of the new season in the fall in his normal role as Special Agent Omar Adom Zidan, and FBI's upcoming time jump could complicate a reunion. Maggie's new partner could be another complication from the jump. Maggie's New FBI Season 9 Partner Explained Maggie isn't going to be on her own in the new season while OA is undercover, nor will she be third-wheeling Scola and Eva. Her new partner is Isaiah Green, played by Chicago Med vet Roland Buck III. Green will debut in the season 9 premiere, called "Rendition." While there's no reason to believe that he's going to be a burden to the team, Maggie will be struggling to connect with him. Considering that Maggie and OA have had FBI's strongest partnership (and strongest bond as friends) going back to season 1 in 2018, it's no wonder that a transition over to working with a different agent would be a struggle. Season 8 didn't end on any indication that OA could return to his position at 26 Fed even if he is successful in getting dirt on Anna Vorpe, so Maggie could be facing an indefinite future with Green rather than OA at her side. The premiere will also feature Necar Zadegan as Nikki Reynard, the Deputy Chief of Station on CIA. Whether she has a connection to Green remains to be seen. It would be an interesting twist if Nikki has a CIA mole in the FBI after CIA's first season included an FBI agent infiltrating Nikki's team, but there's no sign that Maggie's new partner has any kind of ulterior motive at this point. Roland Buck III Is A Chicago Med Alum Credit: MovieStillsDB Fans who watch the One Chicago corner of Dick Wolf's TV universe will recognize Agent Isaiah Green when he arrives in FBI's season 9 premiere. Roland Buck III recurred on Chicago Med over the course of eight seasons as Noah Sexton, a med student-turned-doctor who was ousted from Gaffney after crossing some professional lines. Buck definitely isn't reprising his role as Noah for FBI despite Chicago Med taking place in the same TV world of One Chicago, the Law & Order shows, the FBI shows, and CIA. Dick Wolf TV show reusing actors is practically a tradition by this point, however, so it's just a matter of suspending disbelief to accept familiar actors playing totally unrelated characters on different shows. In fact, One Chicago has supplied some of the FBI world's most recent leads. Chicago P.D.'s Jesse Lee Soffer was the face of FBI: International's fourth and final season. Any crossover between FBI and CIA could reunite Buck with Nick Gehlfuss, who spent eight seasons as a series regular on Chicago Med. Roland Buck III will likely be able to disappear into his role as an FBI agent as much as Nick Gehlfuss did for CIA, despite both playing doctors for years on Chicago Med. The grand tradition of Dick Wolf TV shows reusing actors is continuing, and there's no reason why that shouldn't work for FBI's ninth season. Jeremy Sisto, Alana De La Garza, and Juliana Aidén Martinez prove that it works just fine for Law & Order alums coming over to CBS, and Buck can be the latest One Chicago alum to find a new home on CBS while Zeeko Zaki's OA is undercover.
