Connections for today aren't as straightforward as they have been in the past, leading to a difficult puzzle compared to past weeks. Each section of the word groups is incredibly specific, meaning that unless you recognize the right context, you could easily get lost. Thankfully, the contexts themselves aren't too complicated, meaning that sharp puzzle solvers can find the right answers with just a clue or two. You only have four chances to make a mistake before losing a game of Connections, limiting your options as you play. The best advice for any day of Connections is to take your time to understand many possible contexts one phrase could mean besides what seems obvious. Similar to the Letter Boxed NYT puzzles, you have to find patterns to correctly discover the right path. Today's Connections Category Hints August 24 #1171 Each category in today's puzzle is independent of one another in some way, meaning you have to identify the theme without a starting hint to back you up. That being said, some of the words today leave little room for misinterpretation, leaving room for you to make fewer mistakes. Try to divide sections from each other based on what you do understand, and go from there to discover each answer. If you want to know some hints regarding today's puzzle categories, check out these clues below: One category is about types of animals usually found in bodies of water that you catch, cook, clean, and eat. One category is about terms used to describe something being of the utmost priority. One category is about specific phrases one would use within an entertainment genre where muscled performers put on shows of athletics with distinct storylines. One category is about words that contain phrases used during matches of a sport between players with rackets. If you want to go all out with some of your clue-searching, you should look at the category names to get some extra help. There are also spoilers for each category if you find yourself needing to solve a single category to finish up. FISH PRINCIPAL PRO-WRESTLING LINGO LETTER HOMOPHONE PLUS TENNIS TERM Today's Connections Answers August 24 #1171 Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained FISH MULLET PIKE SOLE TANG TANG is a strange word in today's Connections, leaving little room for confusion when you look it up as a type of fish. While you can easily make mistakes with SOLE being paired with MAIN or CHIEF for "something standing on its own," you can also realize that a SOLE is a fish you might catch, clean, and eat. In that same vein, catching a MULLET or PIKE also fits this category centered in nature. Green Answers: Revealed & Explained PRINCIPAL ARCH CHIEF MAIN PRIME This category was the easiest in the puzzle for me to solve, as I put CHIEF and MAIN together early, albeit with SOLE as a mistake. Both CHIEF and MAIN represent something with priority, which you can apply to PRIME as well. As long as you don't assume that ARCH represents an "arch-enemy" or some similar concept, you'll be able to get this answer together. Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained PRO-WRESTLING LINGO FACE HEEL JOBBER KAYFABE The biggest clue for this part of the puzzle is the word KAYFABE, which solely represents a term used in pro-wrestling to mask the "fake" aspect of the competitions. Once you get in the mindset of pro-wrestling, seeing the words HEEL and JOBBER should trigger some pattern recognition, as both terms are roles wrestlers will adopt for entertainment. At the same time, a FACE is another role for a pro-wrestler, forging the final right answer. Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained LETTER HOMOPHONE PLUS TENNIS TERM BESET DESERVE EX-LOVE EYELET Purple is by far the hardest category for today, as its words have nothing to do with their meanings. The biggest clue here is EX-LOVE, where the word "Love" is separated as a term for a 0 score in tennis. With this logic, applying "Let" to EYELET, "Serve" to DESERVE, and "Set" to BESET forms the last part of the Connections, even if you only find this pattern out by solving everything else first.
