Nvidia's mid-range segment may not exist next generation, and the reason isn't what you'd expect

In the beginning of August, I published a rather alarming piece arguing that GDDR7 pricing and the overarching DRAM crisis were holding Nvidia's RTX 50-series refresh hostage. It now looks like the problem may be bigger than a delayed refresh, however, because there's growing evidence that an entire segment of Nvidia's GeForce RTX lineup is poised to find itself in what can only be described as an existential crisis. Most silicon giants have acknowledged that memory supply is constrained, while board partners have separately confirmed that the shortages are already affecting the production and restocking of various high-VRAM SKUs. In what seems to be the first year in nearly 30 years that Nvidia has not released a single new GPU architecture, there is reason to believe that the industry's mid-range woes are only beginning. Nvidia has a memory problem, and it's only beginning GDDR7 is becoming too valuable to waste on the wrong GPU In its February 2026 annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nvidia warned that they expected supply constraints to "be a headwind to Gaming in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 and beyond", while in the very same month, CEO Jensen Huang confirmed that gaming graphics card supply would remain "very tight" for multiple quarters. Now, the constrained nature of supply is hardly news, but the fact that concerns buyers primarily in the mid-range segment is that this shortage disproportionately impacts GPUs at every tier. During CES 2026, Gigabyte CEO Eddie Lin suggested that Nvidia could prioritize and de-prioritize GPUs based on the revenue each gigabyte of GDDR7 generates, which is proportional to the ratio of MSRP to memory capacity. For example, as Tom's Hardware puts it, a flagship RTX 5090 with 32GB of GDDR7 memory at an MSRP of $1,999 would fetch a revenue of $62.47 for every gigabyte of GDDR7 allocated to it, whereas an RTX 5060 Ti with 16 GB of GDDR7 would fetch just $26.81 per gigabyte at $430. Evidently, the memory math is not doing any favors to GPUs with low MSRP and high VRAM allocation, and this offers a rather transparent explanation for why the mid-range is currently being disproportionately exposed to supply cuts. The mid-range is already feeling the squeeze High-VRAM GPUs are nearly impossible to get at MSRP in this market If you've recently been in the market to shop for a GPU, you have likely been taken aback by the prices, which certainly have come a long way since the pre-AI boom era. As per the most recent price tracking by analysts, the RTX 5060 Ti climbed from $569.99 in June to about $804.99 in August, which is almost a 40% rise in a span of two months. The Blackwell mid-range champion, the RTX 5070, meanwhile, saw a 36% uptick, reaching the $900 mark. Curiously enough, the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB only saw a modest rise of 13%, despite running the same silicon as the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, which is almost twice as expensive now. It is, therefore, obvious that VRAM is now dictating prices more heavily than silicon, and a sizable VRAM buffer is one of the most defining characteristics of an ideal mid-range or upper-mid-range card. If Eddie Lin's revenue-per-gigabyte formula is applied here, the mid-range sees far less allocation priority than the flagship counterparts, creating an even more awkward situation for mid-range buyers. Is Nvidia's next generation going to skip the mid-range? If GDDR7 remains scarce, the mid-range may be the hardest to justify There also seems to be yet another wrinkle to Nvidia's memory problem that makes the idea of a next-generation mid-range lineup farfetched, given the state of the memory economy. As I covered earlier, the RTX 50 Super refresh is reportedly stuck in a limbo because of unfeasible GDDR7 costs. According to VideoCardz's supply-chain sources, there is a particular cost variance between a 3GB and a 2GB GDDR7 module. The sources state that while a 2GB GDDR7 module costs $20, a 3GB GDDR7 module can cost roughly thrice as much, for just 50% more capacity. With multiple modules needed for a GPU, this variance itself can add hundreds of dollars to the total bill of materials. It also partly explains why 8GB GPUs keep flooding the market despite the consumer market's demands (and needs) for more VRAM. An 8GB card will need half the memory capacity of its 16GB counterpart, and so, Nvidia can continue to maintain its presence in the volume segment while consuming less of a scarce resource. The 8GB configuration may not be what gamers and home labbers want, but it is what Nvidia could reasonably consider sensible to deliver. Should these conditions persist into the next generation, there is a high likelihood of Nvidia's lineup becoming heavily polarized. Budget cards can survive on low memory capacities, and flagships can justify their allocation through much higher revenue per gigabyte. That leaves the traditional mid-range stranded in between, which needs VRAM to stay competitive, but doesn't generate as much revenue to demand the allocation. The mid-range has become economically obsolete in the new memory economy The categorical "mid-range" GPU, which has offered the right balance of cost, performance and VRAM, has been silently pushed out of its segment of residence and made out of reach to buyers who need them. The signals that point towards the disappearance of the mid-range are all over the place, and in the overarching memory economy that governs the production of mid-range GPUs, the cards have already stopped making economic sense. Now, whether the cards disappear from Nvidia's product lineup, or simply become prohibitively expensive for the consumers that need them, there really isn't much of a difference between either scenario.
