Nvidia CEO warns against regulating AI like social media

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is striking a different tone on artificial intelligence regulation from his fellow industry leaders, putting his foot down on the idea that AI needs new laws to govern its path forward and that it could be regulated like social media.Huang, president of the world’s most powerful AI computer chip company, stood up against major AI regulation at a conference held by King Charles III in Scotland on Thursday. Huang’s stance stood out while the AI-cautionary king held the conference to advocate safeguards in the industry, as other AI leaders, such as Dario Amodei of Anthropic, have issued serious warnings about the need for regulation.“Unlike social media, which is a product, AI is a technology that’s behind all of these other tech, all of these products — and so, regulate the products,” Huang told reporters on Thursday. Huang argued during the conference that AI leaders should continue to quickly push the frontier on model development, according to the BBC. His sentiment builds upon a point he made in an interview with CNBC this week, in which he said new laws to regulate AI would be “completely unnecessary” and that AI companies are already holding back models if they are not ready for release. On Thursday, Huang built upon these points on a global stage, in the face of the king and industry leaders supportive of increased AI regulation.“When a product is not safe enough, we should hold it back and keep engineering. We’ve always done that, and we should continue to do that,” Huang said during the conference, according to Politico.Huang’s view on the matter comes days after Amodei wrote an essay titled “We must pace the frontier,” calling for a coordinated global regulation of frontier AI development.
